in/situ -- ex/situ (2024 - 2025)
A screen becomes a shelf becomes a partition. Two sheets of colored paper form a flattened horizon upon which a singular stone sits. A fragment of packaging material plays host to a rocky geometric composition. in/situ (2024) evolved from the initial intent to store a large aluminum architectural screen piece that had already had two other "lives" as a work in other exhibitions. After spending time with it in the space, however, it became like another architectural feature of the studio and what was originally a purely practical action became the source of an emergent constellation of entangled portal-like floor compositions. Other forms that had been previously iterated differently were folded or flattened into and onto this arrayed stage while other objects or "characters" who have lived with me or been around or were gifted or newly found were also integrated. In/situ becomes ex/situ (2025). In this differently located stretched out iteration, how much can it modulate and expand while maintaining its integrity? How does this self-organizing system speak to or connect with or diverge from other works in the exhibition? Where and when does it begin or end?
