Pill is an enlarged rendering of a behavioral enrichment object that spent many months with Kali, the resident polar bear at the St Louis Zoo. Behavioral enrichment objects are toys intended to entertain and placate animals living in environments that differ radically from those they evolved in. The original object is fourteen inches in diameter and made of hard plastic. This large translation is a monument to Kali's moods and urges, her anxiety, her curiosity in captivity.
